Reading a repeat

01

Pan across the seams

Drag the pattern and follow the tile edges. A true seamless repeat flows past the join with no visible line.

02

Watch for lighting drift

A gentle gradient across one tile becomes hard stripes in repeat. Zoom out until you see nine tiles or more, then squint.

03

Try another layout

Some motifs only settle in half-drop or mirror. If the straight repeat feels stripey, a layout switch often saves the design.

Seamless patterns, answered

How do I check if my pattern is seamless?

Drop your tile onto the proofing table above. The checker tiles it in true repeat, reads the wrap edges pixel by pixel, and tells you whether the left meets the right and the top meets the bottom without a visible seam. Turn on Drift and the repeat sweeps slowly across the table, which makes even a faint seam catch your eye.

What makes a pattern seamless?

A seamless pattern is a tile whose edges wrap. Any motif that leaves the right side must re-enter on the left at the same height, and the same goes for top and bottom. Lighting matters too, since a subtle gradient across one tile turns into hard stripes in repeat.

Which repeat layouts can I preview?

Straight, half-drop, brick and mirror. Half-drop and brick are the classic layouts for fabric and wallpaper, and mirror can rescue a motif that stripes in straight repeat.

Is the seamless pattern checker really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark beyond a small caption on the proof sheet, and no upload. The checker runs entirely in your browser, so your artwork never leaves your device.
